Corvinus University of Budapest:

Faculty of Business Administration

Corvinus University of Budapest (CUB), an independent Hungarian state university in the field of economic sciences, dates back to 1948 – its earliest predecessor, Collegium Scientiarum Politico-Cameralium, was established in 1763. Over the years, the University’s name has changed a number of times, reflecting both political and structural changes. The latest name change took place as recently as 2003-2004, when CUB brought together three, previously independent, higher education institutions – the Budapest University of Economic Sciences, the College of Public Administration, and the University of Horticultural Science and Food Science. The name ‘Corvinus’ was chosen to reflect the university’s humanistic approach and openness to science and culture in all its activities – Matthias Corvinus was the greatest Renaissance king of Hungary. Today, CUB encompasses a total of seven faculties and has 18,032 students.

Faculty of Business Administration (FBA), the largest amongst the seven CUB faculties, gives home to 6,143 students – over one-third of the entire CUB student population. FBA is a centre for education and research in almost all fields of managerial sciences. It provides education at BA/BSc, MA/MSc, postgraduate (MBA), and PhD levels in the fields of Management, Marketing and Media, International Business, Finance and Accounting, Business Economics, Development for Enterprises, Management Science, Business Law, Information Science, and Environmental Science.

The FBA academic staff – highly qualified, research active, corporate aware, and internationally experienced – are a major institutional strength, particularly for all programmes. Their involvement in the FBA programmes is much more than just professionally adequate – dedication and enthusiasm are personal characteristics of each and every member of the academic team. The academic staff contributes to the FBA institutional arrangements with their extensive network of corporate connections and international collaborations.

FBA offers a truly international student environment. In the past 18 years, over 6,000 students have taken part in international FBA programmes, representing a total of 85 countries. In the fall semester of 2008-2009, there were 485 international students, from 41 countries representing every continent – Africa (2), America (130), Asia (72), Australia (1), and Europe (280). From a student’s perspective, FBA international collaborations have resulted in a wide range of opportunities to meet and work together with students from other countries.

FBA plans to extend its participation in international collaborative networks, while continuing to strengthen its existing commitments in this area. The most significant ones, in chronological order, are:

  • CEMS (Community of European Management Schools) – since 1996
  • EDAMBA (European Doctoral Programmes Association in Management and Business Administration) – since 1997
  • PIM (Partnership in International Management) - since 2002
  • EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development) - since 2006.
