Jacobs University Bremen: The whole world on one campus
The international private Jacobs University Bremen, which was opened in 2001, is an English-language campus university educating young academic talents from all over the world. Its profile: excellence in research and teaching on the basis of an intercultural and transdisciplinary approach. Jacobs University is the only private university in Germany to offer a wide range of majors in engineering, the natural and the social sciences as well as the humanities. A student-faculty ratio of 10 to 1 allows for excellent individualized attention and ample opportunities for undergraduate and graduate research in state-of-the-art facilities.
Around 1,212 young people from more than 92 countries are currently being educated at Jacobs University in order to become world citizens with leadership qualities. Admission from a large field of international applicants is strictly need-blind but highly selective on the basis of achievements. “We select our students according to talent and personal maturity, which in itself makes them a unique group of people. No sophisticated curriculum can convey as much as these young people learn by living together in our on-campus colleges.”, says Joachim Treusch, President of Jacobs University. While German and other European universities are busy to strengthen entrepreneurship education inside and outside the curricula, the approach needs to be extended far beyond management sciences from Jacobs University's point of view. “The visions of future decision-makers who have a deep understanding of science as well as intercultural skills and combine economical thinking with a social vision are urgently needed in order to define sustainable development and find solutions to global challenges. Jacobs University is the perfect place for acquiring this mix of specialized knowledge, general skills and intercultural experience”, Treusch is sure of.
Jacobs University, which has been state-approved right from the start, recently has also been re-accredited by the German Science and Humanities Council for the maximum possible period of 10 years. The university has over 700 research co-operations worldwide with scientific and business partners and is also extremely well connected with the region’s business companies, universities and major research institutions, among them the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology. With a recent 200 million Euro donation and commitment from the Swiss Jacobs Foundation, Jacobs University is quickly becoming an extremely attractive option for competitive students worldwide.
